This is a pretty rare fruit species. Rukam (Flacortia rukam) is a small fruiting tree native to India with clusters of small (nickel to quarter sized) purple skinned fruits tasting like a cross between a plum and a red grape.
Rukam is distinct from it’s more common relative, the Governor’s Plum (Flacortia indica), in that it is thornless and the fruit is not as astringent when picked early. However, the Rukam do not seem to produce viable seeds and thus we use Governor’s Plum as the rootstock for these grafted trees.
In SW Florida, both species seems to thrive on neglect though the Rukam does seem to prefer partial shade and is very fruitful in that situation.
These are grafted trees and often begin fruiting within the first year of planting.
